Discovering the Best Hikes and Activities at Cheesequake State Park, New Jersey

If you're looking for a great place to hike in New Jersey, look no further than Cheesequake State Park. Located in Matawan, this beautiful park offers a variety of trails that wind through the lush forests and wetlands of the area. 1. Green Trail Boardwalk: This is the most popular trail in the park, and for good reason. The 0.8-mile boardwalk winds through the wetlands and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. 2. Yellow Trail: If you're looking for a bit more of a challenge, try the 3.5-mile Yellow Trail. This trail takes you through the forest and offers a variety of terrain, including hills and rocky sections. 3. Blue Trail: For a longer hike with even more challenges, check out the 5.5-mile Blue Trail. This trail takes you through both the wetlands and the forest, and offers some steep hills and rocky sections. But the views are well worth it!

4. Red Trail: If you're an experienced hiker looking for a real challenge, the 7.5-mile Red Trail is for you. This trail takes you through the entire park, including the wetlands, the forest, and Hooks Creek Lake. You'll see a variety of wildlife and natural features, and get a great workout in the process.

No matter which trail you choose, be sure to bring plenty of water, wear comfortable shoes, and pack a snack or picnic lunch to enjoy along the way. And don't forget to bring your camera, as there are plenty of photo opportunities in the park!


But hiking isn't the only activity you can enjoy at Cheesequake State Park. Hooks Creek Lake offers a variety of water activities, including fishing, boating, and swimming. If you're interested in fishing, the lake is stocked with a variety of fish, including bass, catfish, and sunfish. And if you don't have your own boat, you can rent one from the park's concession stand.



If you'd rather swim, Hooks Creek Lake has a designated swimming area with a sandy beach and lifeguards on duty during the summer months. The water is clean and refreshing, making it the perfect place to cool off on a hot day.


In addition to outdoor activities, Cheesequake State Park also has an education center that offers a variety of programs and exhibits about the park's natural and cultural history. The center is open year-round and is a great place to learn more about the park and its wildlife.
