Unveiling the Beauty of Deep Cut Gardens: A Horticultural Haven in Middletown

Updated: Apr 10

Nestled in the heart of Middletown, New Jersey, Deep Cut Gardens stands as a testament to the rich history and enduring beauty of the region. Once a colonial settlement and later transformed into a lush estate, this 54-acre oasis now serves as a haven for home gardeners and nature enthusiasts alike. Let's embark on a journey through time and flora, as we uncover the captivating story and enchanting landscapes of Deep Cut Gardens.

History Unveiled: From Settlement to Sanctuary

In the late 1600s, the land that now hosts Deep Cut Gardens bordered Middletown Village, marking the beginnings of Monmouth County's first European settlement. Over the centuries, the landscape evolved, passing through the hands of various owners until it found itself in the care of Edward and Teresa R. Dangler in 1890. The transformation truly began in 1928 when the Danglers erected a magnificent Colonial Revival Mansion atop the hilltop, setting the stage for what would become Deep Cut Gardens.

Under the stewardship of Vito Genovese in 1935, the estate underwent a remarkable metamorphosis, infused with a pseudo-Italian flair reminiscent of Naples, Italy. The vision of Theodore Stout, the garden's designer, brought to life a fusion of English and Italian styles, featuring terraced gardens, a rockery inspired by Mt. Vesuvius, and a charming pergola that still stands today. Despite Genovese's departure in 1937 and an unforeseen fire that consumed the mansion, the spirit of Deep Cut Gardens endured, continuing to flourish through subsequent owners, including Karl and Marjorie Wihtol.
